Join HV Capital’s Deeptech team to turn breakthrough science into high-impact startups. Research-led, hands-on role at Europe’s tech frontier—work with top founders and investors in STEM fields.
Job description
HV Capital is one of Europe’s leading early-stage and growth investors. Over 25 years and across nine fund generations, we have supported over 225 internet and technology companies, with €2.8bn in assets under management. Our portfolio features global success stories (Zalando, Delivery Hero, Sumup, Depop), and pioneers in innovation (Enpal, Flixbus, Sennder, Isar Aerospace), backing founders from initial ticket to scale-up with investments ranging from €0.5m to €60m.
Our Early Stage Deeptech Team:
Our Early Stage Deeptech team, led by Jan Miczaika (Senior Partner) and Maxi Pethö-Schramm (Principal), operates at the forefront of science and entrepreneurship. We collaborate with the most ambitious researchers, inventors, and founders across Europe who are transforming breakthrough discoveries into impactful ventures. Our sectoral focus lies where commercial potential meets significant technical complexity, including robotics (e.g., Neura Robotics), quantum computing (e.g., Kipu Quantum), space (e.g., Isar Aerospace), resilient supply chains and industrial biotech (e.g., Again Bio), energy (e.g., Marvel Fusion), semiconductors, and more. We are deeply integrated into Europe’s leading technical ecosystems and research clusters, working alongside universities, research labs, and multidisciplinary teams from pre-seed to Series A. Our growing portfolio is made up of teams of scientists and engineers addressing major, uncharted challenges at the intersection of technical possibility and commercial viability.
The Role:
You will join Jan and Maxi as the third core member of this highly specialised, hands-on team, gaining unparalleled access to the earliest and most complex stages of company building, scouting, diligence, and value-added support. This is a distinctly research-driven analyst role: less about high-volume funnel creation and more about developing real insights at the intersection of technology and venture.
Key Focus Areas
Technology & Market Research: Develop deep expertise in emerging science/engineering fields (quantum, biotech, materials, climate) and proactively identify investable opportunities before they become mainstream.
Investment Process Support: Manage the analytical core of deal assessment, conducting detailed technical and market research, benchmarking, primary expert interviews, and synthesis of academic and patent literature to inform investment decisions.
Portfolio Value Creation: Collaborate directly with technical founders after investment on topics unique to deeptech, such as accessing public/non-dilutive funding, building teams (hiring technical, scientific, and commercial talent), developing partnerships, and formulating commercial and financial strategies.
Founder Enablement: Act as a business mentor for scientists transitioning from lab to market—coaching, challenging, and supporting them to build credibility, prepare for investment, and scale their ventures.
Job requirements
We are seeking candidates who combine scientific excellence with commercial acumen and thrive in technically complex, high-autonomy environments:
Academic Foundation: We are open to candidates from all academic backgrounds, with a preference for those who have engaged deeply with technology, science, or engineering topics. STEM degrees (Physics, Biology, Engineering, etc.) are an advantage, but not required. If you come from a business, economics, or other field, you should have a proven track record of working on DeepTech topics (e.g., research, internships, projects, or startup experience).
Multidisciplinary Experience: Relevant first-hand experience through research, strategy consulting, investment banking, startup/scale-up roles, or entrepreneurial exposure. Experience working on deeptech, scientific, or technology commercialisation projects is advantageous.
Intellectual Curiosity: Demonstrated passion for scientific advancements and emerging technology. Naturally inquisitive and resourceful—motivated to explore unfamiliar scientific domains in depth and quickly synthesise insights from primary literature, patents, and expert networks.
Analytical & Commercial Judgment: Ability to assess not just the technical promise but also the commercial viability and market potential of breakthrough science. Fluency in both “research language” and “VC language”, capable of bridging the worlds of academia, entrepreneurship, and investment.
Work Ethic & Independence: Highly conscientious, reliable, and detail-oriented. Strong sense of responsiveness, able to quickly react to changing priorities, switch content smoothly across diverse topics, and deliver high-quality work under tight timelines. Comfortable adapting to changing tasks and thriving in fast-paced, ambiguous environments. Capable of independently structuring and driving complex analytical workstreams while remaining closely connected to a small, collaborative team.
Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; able to translate technical concepts into clear, actionable insights for both scientific and non-technical audiences. Proficiency in English (professional level) is required; German and/or other European languages are a plus.
